While the success, "300" was the 24th biggest box office opening in history, the film was awash in controversy over his production style to its historical accuracy. Critics were divided across the world with some passionate and others hate it - there was no apparent average with this film.
"300" opened to the public in Greece to standing ovations and sentence in Iran. Iranian President Ahmadinejad denounced the film, outraged by the depiction of the historical identity of Iran. Adding fuel to the controversy, "300" director Zack Snyder, in an interview on MTV called the film 90% of historical facts.
In the film the Persians are depicted as a monstrous semi-human beings will horde of demonic magic and weak. The film, even going so far as to suggest that the Persians were prone to pedophilia and portrays their leader Xerxes, played by Rodrigo Santoro, an androgynous "God King".
As for "300" is historically accurate - An examination of history reveals the film is clearly inadequate.
The film focuses travel around King Leonidas of Sparta "from childhood to the Spartan king and his upbringing in the Spartan fashion, but little is known historically about King Leonidas before his reign of more than Sparta.
The film is a narrative account by Dilios Spartan soldier played by David Wenham. The character was actually Dilios a Spartan warrior named Aristodemo, the sole Spartan survivor of the Battle of Thermopylae.
Dilios is revealed as the narrator in the film at the end when is meeting at 10,000 Spartans commanding 30,000 Greeks who are prepared to avenge Leonidas and the 300. In the film Dilios is sent home by Leonidas after a battle that Dilios suffer an eye injury. Leonidas asks Dilios to take a message to the queen. History tells us that Aristodemo (Dili) was attacked by an infection of the eye, together with Eurit, (not mentioned in the film) and ordered home by Leonidas, as they were not fit for battle. However Eurit turned and died in battle. Aristodemo was considered in Spartan history as a coward for not having done the same.
In the film, King Leonidas, played by Gerard Butler, is credited have caused the Persian king Xerxes in the war killing his messengers, sent to negotiate the terms. When Leonidas can not get the Spartan council agreed to battle, develop a plan for 300 Spartan soldiers to defend the Hot Gates (Thermopylae), hoping that their sacrifice foothills of the Council to send the Spartan army to war with the Persians.
Leonidas, through a heroic figure in the real story had little to do with the decision to hold the Thermopylae and absolutely nothing to do with the start of a conflict with the Persians. Athenian general Themistocles should credit for the battle plan which proposes that the Greek allied forces blocking advancing Persian army at the pass at Thermopylae, while simultaneously the Persian fleet at the Battle of Artemisia. Moreover, the Persian attack was not caused by Leonidas actions with the messengers of Xerxes, but was in response to the Persian defeat at the hands of the Athenians at the battle of Marathon.
The Battle of Thermopylae lasted seven days, three of these days he spent in battle. After the second day, a local resident named Ephialtes betrayed the area Greek forces, disclose to the Persians a path that leads behind the Greek lines. Leonidas at that time held the Persians at bay with a force of about 7,000 soldiers who accumulated over several Greek states during their march to Thermopylae, not the mere 300 of the film would have us believe.
Ephialtes is portrayed in the film as a hunchback deformed before Sparta, whose family was disgraced because of his physical deformities. Ephialtes is offered to Leonidas for battle, saying he is aware local land and wants to fight like a Spartan and restore his father's name. Leonidas, though sympathetic, declining his offer, explaining that his deformities endanger physical famous Spartans - a phalanx formation.
Actual was Ephialtes of Thessaly, a village near Themopylae and was little more than a local who reported Persian generals of the existence of the path of a reward. Never compensated by the Persians and later killed by Athenades of Thessaly on a matter unrelated.
In the last hours of actual conflict, Leonidas defends Thermopylae with 1,000 troops, which dismissed the bulk of the Greek army when he realized he was being overwhelmed. The remaining group, with the king were a mixture of Thespians, Thebans and of course, the 300 Spartans, who were in fact the king's bodyguard. The story of Leonidas and the 300 "" is one of the great masses of the past history and the film is entertaining but he is not and never should have been offered as a history lesson on the screen silver.
