HBO Series

The recent HBO mini-series John Adams represents many historical American flags that were used during the Revolutionary War period.

These indicators were the first versions of the national flag and some were used by the regiment during the war. For example, in the opening credits of one of the flags shown is the flag of Culpepper.

This flag represents a group of hundreds of patriots from Culpepper, Virginia. The group formed part of the First Colonel Patrick Henry, Virginia Regiment, 1775. In October-November 1775 three hundred such Minutemen, led by Colonel Stewart, met in Culpepper Court House and marched to Williamsburg.

Their unusual dress alarmed the people who marched through the country. The word "liberty or death" were in large white letters in the breast of their hunting shirts. They had tails dollars "in their hats and on their belts, axes and knives scalp.

Another indicator that is used during the show is the Grand Union flag. This flag was never officially adopted by the Continental Congress, but is widely recongnized as the first flag United States

This flag was an alteration of the British Meteor flag. The blue canton was the red cross of ST. George and the white cross of ST. Andrew. The thirteen stripes meaning of the original colonies.

The Washington flag Cruises is also another flag is displayed in the opening credits of the miniseries.

This flag was used by George Washington on his squadron of six schooners outfitted its coast in the autumn of 1775. This flag was a variation state flag of New England pine. It was later modified and adopted by the Navy of Massachusetts.

The Sons of Liberty together under a large tree in Boston, Massachusetts, which became known as "The Tree of Liberty". This tree became a symbol of American independence. Knowing who faced a great military power they believed they were being sustained by a greater power, thus its "appeal to heaven."
