Vinegar for acid burns? Please explain.?

I think the intuition that if suffering from acid burn the last thing I would do is put more acid in it. However - there is a scene in the movie Fight Club where Ed Norton's character is suffering from acid burns, while being held down by the character of Brad Pitt. Finally, Norton Pitt reveals his suffering by pouring vinegar on the burn - and - almost immediately - the pain is relieved. Similarly, in the HBO series "Carnivale" is a scene where a man purposely disfiguring his face immersion in hydrochloric acid. After he has done (and the screams of pain, of course) - pour it sees a bottle of vinegar in the face to stop the pain. I can not believe this would be sweet in 2 different productions and have some vaildity it. Can someone tell me if this is fact or fiction - and - if it is true that vinegar will relieve the pain of burns acid - why?

What is this? Hollywood movies becoming obvious scientific errors? I'm outraged, I say! Surprised! And here I thought it was only a matter of time, humanity has begun to use atomic energy, until a large reptile from the sea and out of Tokyo!
