No officials of John Adam take the furniture?

In (tonight, April 6) episode of the HBO mini-series "John Adams" at the scene after Adams is sworn in by the President, we learned that officials have taken (stolen?) all the furniture in the house (again?). Does anyone know the origin This historical anecdote? Thanks in advance!

The series is based on McCullough's biography, John Adams. When he took office in Philadelphia, found the executive mansion furnished rental unfortunately, almost stripped of what the supply was not Washington's personal property. See pp 476 and following. And any officials that took something that would not have been officials of Adams.
