HBO Series

The first satellite TV transmission set out to capture something more ambitious than the latest sports channels: try outer space.

In 1957, Sputnik, the Soviet Union's first artificial satellite sent the first images of outer space, surpassing the United States for a year (which later sent a small scientific satellite called Explorer I).

Although emissions were quite long hours of very big and funky looking rocks (adding a new dimension to the phrase in the media industry, a "dead aira") competition between the Union Soviet and U.S. almost marked the beginning of the beginning of satellite communications. In 1973, the Canadian satellite Anik I became the first World satellite television network that shows pictures of a far more entertaining "stars" instead of, well, stars.

Thus, potatoes, the coach of this world began their wonderful love story with the television networks via satellite. HBO began broadcasting their signals to companies cable, the WHO a "soldier" access to the channel. The problem with this, of course, was that for each channel requested, had to pay a bit more. There is good news for channel surfers who want their rabid 100 + channels available. And it got pretty frustrating for those who learned about a new movie or sports event that is displayed, only to discover that the signal has been locked and available only to "premium subscribers".

Later, companies began to sell real antennas. In essence, you paid for the equipment but has free satellite TV. That wasnÂ't good news for the cable company, they were losing sales to people subscription. They tried to encoding of information. It means that people had to buy the decoder to see the signs. However, it still made for the coach potato: hundreds of channels available, and no risk of being stuck at home with nothing but repeats. (Unless youÂ're repetition, in which case there are entire channels dedicated to them).

For the 1990th companies began launching their own satellites and to enter the market satellite television. For example, there Primestar, then Direct TV and finally, Dish Network. It was a more competitive market. It is also good for the consumer: competition means the race to provide better entertainment, and more channels.

Today, the satellite television technology has become very, very cool: clear signals, more reliable transmission, and several providers which guarantee that there always something good to watch. With TiVo you can even record programs and watch them when ready youÂ're-or, if it does not work for you, you can connect your VCR or DVD recordable, and the tape to another time.

So maybe we havenÂ't conquered outer space yet. The space race has slowed, and dreams of colonizing Mars have become largely limited to films and cheesy sci-fi shows. But technology has made it possible to Rule the world with your remote control. Now sit and wait. Open fries. Put your feet up and enjoy. It may be decades before we understand the secrets of the universe, but you can always see a movie while you wait.
