The nearly 220,000 residents of Chula Vista - a city in southern California - has been a disturbing increase in incidents of drunk driving in recent years in San Diego County. It seems that the trend reached its peak during the holiday season of 2009 when 496 people were arrested for driving under the influence during a period of 10 days in the area.
The California Highway Patrol was very busy, arresting 60 people for DUI during the 60 hours after Christmas Eve. The math works out to about an arrest for drunk driving per hour, a number that has shocked Chula Vista drunk driving lawyers. One of the three fatal accidents took place during this period of time a Chula Vista man who drove into a tree.
Unfortunately, the danger is not just for those who drive cars. Between June 2003 and June 2008, Chula Vista saw 294 car collisions involve pedestrians. One of these accident in April 2007, left a 15-year-old boy died after being struck by a sport utility vehicle. Was walking on I-5 to the North at 11 pm when the accident occurred, and it is unknown if he was reminded of the dangers of walking along a road at night.
More recently, an elderly woman in her sixties, was hit by a car at 3rd Avenue near K Street This accident occurred in the first of the New Year, 2010.
Clearly, car accidents of all varieties are a problem in Chula Vista and San Diego region. To counter the statistics, a pedestrian advocacy called "Paseo de San Diego" has developed a list of the 10 most dangerous intersections for pedestrians. One of these intersections are located at Broadway and H Street in Chula Sight. The group hopes to make streets more accessible to pedestrians - and any other person of a vehicle - by raising awareness of the dangers for everyone on the road.
The sad reality is that pedestrians are not much of a chance against a car in a fatal car crash. The protection a car would give a driver is completely lost for a pedestrian to some extent, are at the mercy of drivers. This shows that drivers and pedestrians alike need to be more related to safety on the roads in Chula Vista.
The debate should be broadened to include cycling and especially in light of the crash of 2009 where a girl in the seat of a bicycle was killed in an accident with a street car. The girl was strapped to a bicycle seat that his father was riding. Without realizing the proximity of the car, the father tried to mount them on the trolley tracks. The impact sent the two riders 40 feet from the impact, killing the young and wounds to his father.
